Berthold Vöcking, who was a professor for Algorithms and Complexity at RWTH Aachen, passed away on 11th June after a long illness. He was only 47.
Berthold was a leading figure in algorithmics research in Europe, was an invited speaker at ICALP 2012 and was one of the authors of the best paper for Track C at this year's ICALP, where we will remember him during the award session.
Our thoughts go to his family.

I am very sad to hear this news. Berthold was an excellent researcher; I'd recommend that those who don't know his work to read some, it's great stuff.
I wrote something on my blog as well.
Thanks Michael. I added a link to your blog post.
That's very sad. Berthold was kind to me when I was just a dumb master's student visiting Paderborn and he was (already) a rising star finishing up his PhD. He even gave me a problem to work on.
This is sad news indeed. Berthold was a phenomenal researcher. I had a chance to visit him and his group in Aachen for 10 days in 2007. I was quite impressed by the strong research that he built at Aachen. I have been quite impressed by his breakthrough results in various areas even in the past couple of years, e.g., his recent single-author SODA paper in Bayesian mechanism design, or his nice STOC'14 paper about online stochastic packing. The algorithms community lost a great contributor. --Vahab
